Wanted: Miss Alderney 2010

And just when you thought election time is over, Alderney is getting ready for its very own, far more important election on  Saturday 29 May in the Island Hall:  Miss Alderney 2010.

Although no manifesto is required, several conditions apply to all contestants:  To enter, the young ladies (between 17 and 25 years of age) must be at least 17 years old on 31 July 2010,  unmarried, live on the island and must be on the island throughout Alderney Week.

All candidates are invited to present themselves between 8.30pm and 9.00pm at the Anne French Room for an informal chat with four judges (2 ladies and 2 gentlemen, including this year TV personality and singer/song-writer Richard Digance) who will make their onerous decision based not just on looks, but on overall impressions, appearance and style, personality, manners, confidence and the willingness and enthusiasm  to be a young ambassadress for Alderney and Alderney Week. They’ll want to hear about the candidates’ hobbies, interests, their plans for the future, why they’d like to become Miss Alderney and how they would respond to the duties that come with the much coveted title. And all that over a glass of Bucks Fizz or Champagne (or orange juice)    Just look your best but don’t overdo it, put on your favourite party dress.   Don’t wear jeans. Relax, just be your bubbly self and enjoy the experience,” is our advice to all young ladies who would like to enter the competition.

The contestants are spared any possible stress or embarrassment: no daunting catwalk or swimsuit parade. However, at the request of former Miss Alderneys, the public will also get to see and find out a little more about all the lovely young ladies who will be introduced on stage by chat show host Ronnie Cairnduff, before the winners are announced and crowned a little later on.

After the interviews all candidates are given free entry (tickets £5) to watch and dance to the music of live band “Howling at the Moon ”.  Around 10.30pm this year’s winners – two Maids of Honour and Miss Alderney 2010 – will be announced and called on stage to be crowned and presented with their fabulous prizes listed below which will shortly be on display in the office window of Rossborough Insurance in Victoria Street. Then there will be a quick photo call for the trio and brief interviews with the local media  and then it’s back to more celebration and dancing to the sound of “Howling at the Moon”.

Break with tradition

Although traditionally Miss Alderney, her Maids of Honour and friends and family build a float for Cavalcade Day,  the Alderney Week Team appreciates that this task may add unnecessary stress and, in the past few years, may have deterred some ladies from entering the contest. “Whilst it would be great if the tradition of entering the Miss Alderney float could continue, it is not essential and should this year’s chosen Miss Alderney not be able to enter a float, a very kind Alderney resident has offered to drive Miss Alderney and her Maids of Honour in a very royal transport alternative which comes in the shape of a convertible vintage Bentley limousine”, said Alderney Week Team Leader Ronnie Cairnduff.

As to the duties of Miss Alderney and Her Maids of Honour (see below), the winning trio will be required to attend a considerable number of Alderney Week events to present prizes throughout the 9-day carnival.

The following week, Miss Alderney will represent her island at the Jersey Battle of Flowers and the fantastic Moonshine Parade (12 & 13 August).

That’s all it takes and the successful candidates are guaranteed a fabulous season of glamour and fun. Any previous Miss Alderney or Maid of Honour is most welcome to present herself again. Indeed, there have been many occasions when the same young lady has held the title in different years, as can be seen on the “Miss Alderney Wall of Fame” page on this website .  Any young lady wanting to know a little more should call Ilona on 824321 or you can ask for a copy of the entry form which will prove how easy and informal and how much fun it is to enter the Miss Alderney contest.  ENDS
